You probably remember Megaupload, the cloud storage service that became very popular thanks to being shut down by the FBI and the investigations carried out against its owner Kim Dotcom. This issue is still in court because it's a case of infringement of intellectual property due to all the copyrights of the contents hosted on the service, including music, movies, video games and other software.
Well, we don't know if Megaupload is ever going to return from its ashes, but in the meantime, Mr. Dotcom hasn't waited around without doing anything before being imprisoned. He has come up with MEGA, a cloud storage service that intends to be a more secure and reliable alternative to Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud and Google Drive.
Megaupload is now MEGA: the official client for iPhone
Yes, that's it. This is the official app of this service for iOS devices, just like there's also a client for Windows, Android, and Mac users. But, why should I go fo this service when there are so many other popular ones out there? Well, basically due to the fact that its developers have tried to create a secure online storage system with end-to-end encryption in which nobody can intercept files during their transfer or once stored on the server, thanks to their crusade against the Administration and their obsession with privacy.
Not even the NSA can snoop on your files.
Without a doubt, this is the main feature that defines this service. Because otherwise, it would be an application with functions very similar to any other client:
- Search for saved files.
- Store any kind of file or document (executables, office documents, PDFs, audio, video, APKs, photos...).
- Share files with other users by means of links.
- Protect their access with passwords.
- Delete and rename files.
The cloud storage service that intends to be the most secure of them all.
What's its capacity? Is it free?
The truth is that this platform is not too bad at all thanks to its great price... we're talking about 50 GB of free space for each user. However, if you want to expand that capacity you can subscribe to different paid PRO plans for prices that range between 4.99€ and 29.99€ per month, to be able to get hold of between 200 GB and 4 TB.
On the other hand, any content that you upload to the cloud can later by easily downloaded to any PC, whether Windows or Linux, thanks to the unofficial download client for this service. We're talking about Megadownloader, that isn't available for iPhone, but that allows us to download to our computer any of our own files or those that have been shared with us by other users.
What's new in the latest version
- Simplified menu reduced to 5 tabs.
- Easier to switch the language within the app.
- Introduces the option to force HTTPS browsing.
- Correction of minor errors.
