About me…

I’m Paul Ryan. My main interest is language, both words but also how and whether we can communicate. I also like red wine, bikes and making bread. In a past life I was a lawyer and now I am a translator, but some things haven’t changed: I still cycle everywhere I can, drink (moderately of course) and make bread.

As someone who is thinking about language in one way or another most of the time, translating is a perfect job. One of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s English translators was once asked if he knew enough Spanish to translate the great man. His reply: “You’re asking the wrong question. You should ask: ‘Do you know enough English?’” That is where I am coming from: I need to know as much English as possible: how do people say things, how do different occupations write? And know your source languages too, of course.

Must have: books and bikes.
