The refund policy of Google reflects several assumptions under which it is possible to claim a refund for purchases you make in the store. However, it should be noted that these conditions are not exactly the same for the United Kingdom and the European Economic Community (EEC) as for the rest of the world. Also, as a general rule, from 28 March 2018, returns and refunds will only be made if the product is defective or if its contents are unrelated to those previously advertised in the store.

The conditions under which a return is accepted are three:

  • That a friend or relative has mistakenly purchased our account.
  • If unauthorized payments appear on any of your payment methods within 120 days of the charge.
  • In the UK and the EEC, once you make a purchase, you have two hours to make a return. However, this only applies to the first purchase you make, in the following cases, you will have to contact Google or the developer.

There are some exceptions and conditions related to games and apps that you should know about:

  • Beware of the right of withdrawal. When you make a subscription that is automatically renewed, it is understood that you waive this right and therefore you cannot claim a refund unless the content is again defective or does not function as it should.
  • This changes slightly for digital services, where you do have 14 days to exercise your right of withdrawal after purchase. After that, you will not be able to do it.
  • Of course, these conditions are subject to change at any time.

To request a refund there are three options. Most Google Play applications are created by third-party developers, so you will need to get assistance from the developer to claim your money back. To contact the developer, launch the Google Play Store application from your Android device by looking for its icon in the application menu or its shortcut. Find the app tab from the search bar at the top of the main screen.

Open the tab and scroll down until you find the Developer Contact section. This should contain information such as an email address, a physical address, and a website, so you can contact the developer.

You will have to indicate the application that gives you problems, the issue, and the type of solution you want (in this case, a refund).

You can also request a refund from the Google Play website. Open the Google Play website. Tap the icon of the three horizontal lines.

Describe the problem, fill in the form, and tap on the Submit button. If you have done everything right, you should receive an email confirming the return as long as you are entitled to it. You may get a response within 15 minutes, although the process may take up to 4 days.

The third and last method is using the Google Assistant. However, to use this third method, your device must be configured in US English If this is your case, you can ask the assistant directly for a refund.

The procedure for claiming a refund from Google Play is similar in the UK and the EEC as well as the rest of the world, except for the first two hours of courtesy in Europe and the method using Google Assistant for the United States.
