To create a map, you will need to have 8 units of paper (you know, placing three sugar canes in a horizontal row). Once you have created it, you will also have to craft a compass. The ingredients needed are 4 iron ingots and a unit of redstone. When you have created the map and have it in your inventory, a button will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating "Complete empty map". Pressing it will automatically generate the map with the surrounding area.

How to increase the size of the map in Minecraft
If the initial area marked on the map is too small, you can extend its range. To do this, you simply need more paper and the current map. Place it in the center of the table with all the paper around it and you will get a larger map.
