Many of us remember that dramatic and agonic moment in February of 2014 when WhatsApp went down for a few hours leaving us without our instant messaging and chat service. What? Phone calls? Communicating like a normal human being? Society almost collapsed and riots were about to take the streets, destroying anything that represented the established power.
Luckily enough, a few smart-asses realized that there was an alternative to the popular North American chat app that came precisely from the USA's historical strategic rival: Russia. Telegram Messenger revealed itself as the most solid and reliable alternative to WhatsApp, offering its users certain advantages that the latter didn't have.
What is Telegram?
Well, as we've just mentioned, it's a chat and instant messaging app developed by the Durov brothers, who are also the creators of the Russian social network VKontakte. It's offered as a free app without adverts to be able to chat with your contacts via text message just like in all applications of this nature: the above-mentioned Wassap, Facebook Messenger, Viber, Skype, Kik Messenger, LINE...
However, how come it started gaining so many users ever since it was released as a beta? Basically, because it offered us a user interface that was similar to that of its rival (with other colors) in terms of design and simplicity, but also because it included functions aimed at protecting the privacy and confidentiality of the user's communications.
We've also got to point out that, unlike some of its competitors, it has evolved very quickly: it has introduced loads of improvements and changes with every updated, setting the pace for other applications in the same category. In other words, it has been a ground-breaker and trendsetter. Although, it's true that in the field of video calls and audio messages they lagged behind. We don't know if it's due to its philosophy or capacity, but it still doesn't allow us to send video messages, and voice calls arrived long after it did on others.
Privacy and state-of-the-art technology are its mainstays.
But don't forget that Skype is the best video call app around, at least for the time being, so even when they do implement this feature it's still going to be hard to overthrow Microsoft's communication tool that coexists with Telegram perfectly on Android and iPhone.
In Telegram, we'll find features and functions such as the following:
- Speedy communications through a single data network.
- Synchronization with the rest of devices and sessions.
- Versions for different platforms: for PC, Linux, Mac, web, and APK format for Android.
- Send files and multimedia without size limits: compatible with DOC, ZIP, MP3...
- Encrypt messages by means of 256-bit AES, 2048-bit RSA, and the exchange of safe keys Diffie-Hellman.
- Chat groups with up to 5,000 members.
- Creation of online communities, information channels, and the mass distribution of messages and bots.
- Designed to reduce the size of the messages sent consuming fewer bytes.
- Support for the delivery of emojis, GIF animations, and frenzy stickers.
Which one's better? Telegram or WhatsApp?
The Russian application probably offers us more guarantees but the North American one has more users and that's where you going to be able to find all your contacts. However, it's possibly the most reliable and solid alternative that you can download for free. Without a doubt, one of the best bargains in the instant messaging field.
