TestDisk is a free open source program that has been developed to recover lost partitions and data, or configure the units so as to make them bootable once again after being affected by any malware.

The program doesn't have a graphical interface and everything has to be done from the command line, so it isn't the ideal application for people that don't have advanced computing knowledge.

Among the functions that the program can carry out, those that are noteworthy are the following:

  - Repair, recover and reconstruct the boot sector of hard drives that use the FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 and NTFS file system.

  - Find files on drives that use the EXT2/EXT3/EXT4, FAT and NTFS file system.

  - Reconstruct MFT images.

  - Compile detailed information about each system hard drive.

Together with the program you'll also find PhotoRec, a utility that has been developed to recover lost photos from any storage unit.

TestDisk is a real multipurpose tool to work with those devices that, due to bad management or a virus, have suffered some kind of damage.
Requirements and additional information:
It can only be used on systems that have Kernel 2.6 or above.
