The best way to have all your multimedia files of the likes of videos, songs, photos and podcasts perfectly organized is with the media center Kodi

9/10 (650 Votes)

In this period in which we're living with so many multimedia contents at our disposal, both online via streaming or downloadable through P2P networks, including movies, series, photos, songs, albums, playlists or podcasts, it's almost a must to have a multimedia center to organize and manage all those contents in a more efficient manner.

The ultimate media center for your movies and series.

And one of the best programs you'll find at present to manage all those videos and audios is the open-source software Kodi, previously known as XBMC or Xbox Media Center, that has just updated to a new stable version that has been codenamed as Krypton. An update that's already available for all the platforms on which it can be installed, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Smart TV.

The main differences with Kodi 17

This new version of Kodi, the name of which is a tribute to Princess Leia from Star Wars, whose main actress Carrie Fisher died just before its development started, comes along with loads of new features regarding Krypton such as those that we list below:

  • Released a specific version for 64-bit architectures and Windows Vista is no longer supported.
  • Improves our video gaming experience with support for controllers, emulators, and ROMs, and a special mention for its compatibility with retro games.
  • Important changes to the GUI for live TV and PVR platforms.
  • Improves the control and management of binary add-ons when it comes to installing and updating them.
  • Adds support for DRM which opens a whole new world of contents for Kodi.
  • Improves the music library and the reception of online TV and radio.

How does Kodi TV work?

The first thing that you should know is that by default, this multimedia program doesn't include any content of its own. It's the user himself, by means of his downloads, local files on his hard drive or streaming services used, who adds the videos, music, and images to Kodi's interface.

Apart from adding his own contents, the user can install third-party add-ons or plug-ins, similarly to Stremio, to get hold of contents made available publicly on different websites. We also have to mention the following additional features and functions:

  • Browse files.
  • File tagging system.
  • Playback of audio files with advanced functions.
  • Support for the main video formats.
  • Library for TV programs with the possibility to be sorted following different criteria.
  • Download covers, metadata, and synopsis.
  • Viewer with different image views.
  • Live TV recording.
  • Support for plug-ins.
  • Skin customization.
  • Possibility to be controlled remotely.

Which one's better? Kodi or XBMC?

Well, that question doesn't make too much sense at this stage. Kodi is the evolution of XBMC which doesn't exist as such anymore. So if you were wondering which one you should download, it's quite clear that the answer should be Kodi, as any XBMC installer will be totally outdated and won't offer you all the advantages of the best media center on the market.

A totally different issue is wondering whether it's better than Plex, its greatest rival at present and another spin-off of Xbox Media Center. And as always, the answer will depend on the use of one system or the other. Initially, the greatest difference between both programs that may influence your decision is that Plex is a client-server system with a database centralized on Plex Media Server, whilst Kodi is a player with its own database that's not shared with other devices. From there on, it's down to you.
